From Australia

Before moving to Bali from Australia, we worked as professional theatre artists for more than 20 years. Grahame was a Director & Writer and Lou a Theatre Set & Costume Designer & Production Manager. The plays we made with Barking Gecko Theatre toured extensively around Australia as well as internationally to Canada including the Vancouver International Children’s Festival, North America, Japan, Korea, Russia, Mexico, Singapore and Indonesia. Grahame was the Artistic Director for the first Awesome International Arts Festival. Together they worked on over ten performances for the Perth International Festival. Lou also on the Executive Committee of ASSITEJ an International Association of Theatre & Performing Arts for Children and Young People.

Inspired to create theatre that highlighted environmental issues, in 1990 we travelled to Borneo and North Sumatra researching the plight of Orangutans. The play Visiting The Relatives was the result of this research. In 1992, Visiting The Relatives was rehearsed, written and designed in the steamy jungles of North Sumatra, on location at an Orangutan rehabilitation centre. This unique development process was challenging and innovative, and would eventually lead to a play about elephants, Ivory Circle, created in Thailand in 1993 and another about bears. Deliverance of Dancing Bears was written and designed in Turkey in 1995. Visiting The Relatives opened in Perth to sold out seasons and critical acclaim, and subsequently toured nationally and internationally over a 5 year period, making it one of Australia’s most successful theatre productions.

To Bali

In 1990, one of our tours took us via Bali and after that we just kept on coming back until it became an annual visit. During one of these visits Grahame began writing and Lou designing two of our most successful touring productions, Frog Opera and  Silverfish.

With one son grown up and married and the second just starting primary school, in 2007, we took the leap to move to Bali and make it our home.

 Bali Life

Our hope is to bring that same creativity to our life in Bali. Grahame thrives on the challenge of designing and building in Bali, whilst Lou is passionate about creating memorable moments for visitors and takes care of much of the detail and finishing design.

We hope to have brought that same flair and creativity to our new life in Bali, and hope it shows in Bali Ginger Suites & Villa. Our aim is to contribute positively to Bali’s people, art, culture and environment which is one of the reasons why we loved re-purposing the antique houses to create Bali Ginger Villa and the Double Happiness Suite. Our aim has been to create an inspiring environment for fun and relaxation for our guests as they discover this amazing place that is Bali.

    Art & Culture

Bali is arguably one of the world’s most artistic culture. The Balinese are skilful painters, musicians, flower arrangers, wood carvers, dancers and weavers. In Bali sometimes it seems like everyone is an artist but the notion of art for art’s sake and the idea of an artist was only recently introduced. Balinese culture is a mix of Balinese Hindu-Buddhist religion and Balinese customs. It is perhaps most known for its dance, drama and sculpture. The culture is noted for its use of the gamelan in music and various traditional events of Balinese society. Each type of music is designated for a specific type of event. Contact Front Desk to see if you are lucky enough to catch a significant Balinese ceremony during your holiday in Bali.
